The house on the right had 2 big browns roosting 4/1/08. It is made with 1" and 2" wood covered with a layer of felt paper for insulation. The outside is covered with aluminum painted black. It is vented on the sides. It faces west and received much use by my big brown maternity colony of 15 females in 2006 and 2007. The baffles are 3/4" pine painted black with saw kerfs cut in. They prefer it over the house on the left which has a shell of 3/8 plywood and probably cools off faster at night.

Here is a view of the landing pads. I made the landing pads out of one inch saw kerfed wood separate from the bat houses. I attached them to the siding with screws first then carried the bat houses up and set them on the landing pads to hold them level while I attached the tops with screws. white urine stains are visible on the landing pads of both houses.

Terry, I bet the bats use the crevice made between the bat house and the building too, especially on extra hot days. I fianally get to try this mounting technique at the Nature Center where the open crevice at the back will be shelter by the eaves of the building itself. I look forward to seeing if your nursery colony of big browns increases this year!

Nate, yes they do...........the siding on my home is rough sawn white pine and the bats roost behind all my bat houses. However, the house on the right does not have a back access/vent like my newer bat houses do. These 2 houses in the picture also are somewhat shaded.

My maternity colony of big browns has stayed at 15 or 16 mothers for the last 3 years.......I have a feeling I am just too far from fresh water........My uncle has a big brown maternity colony about 2 miles away numbering 40-50 mothers but he is much closer to fresh water in the form of a trout stream and large pond and beaver dam.
