I believe this bat box might just hold a few bats. I always see bats each and every evening directly over my house. I see them very early in the morning as well. There are two lakes and the house is in the middle of the two. Delta, Pennsylvania is where this slate came from and is the very first region in the country that slate has been mined. This slate is unfading slate and was a bit on the heavy side to put up. I believe that it is ideal because the slate will help to retain the heat as well as the brick chimney. It is spaced off of the back of the chimney by about 1/2 inch. I do plan to build more of these.

I will be changing the steel mesh to pet mesh for the take off and landing zone. The bats ought to love the high life.

| That is an excellent looking bat house! As for pet mesh I put up quite a few more bat houses with it this summer. I mounted several to do some side by side comparisons of pet mesh, saw kerfed, weathered wood, rough sawn wood and wafer board baffles but the bats so overwhelmingly preferred the pet mesh I stopped recording data. I'm guessing my usage this summer was at least five times more in the mesh baffles over all the others........

Very nice slate bat box indeed! Looking forward to some definitive occupancy results and feedback. Terry, really appreciate the feedback on petmesh. I used it in my foam rocket bat house below a few years ago which I'm re-posting now. The owners of the home/yard in which we installed it said it is full of little browns now. I'm wondering if they like the fact that pet screening also darkens the interior as well.

Joe, I believe the darkening effect of the pet mesh does help. That is great news about the little browns!
I think this year any bat houses I build for maternity use are going to have pet mesh. It costs about twice as much as regular fiberglass mesh but I think it's worth it.

I like that rocket house and will build one made of wood and slate in the near future.
