Muslims had some very strange pets (for us) so I'm wondering if the story has
some real base. Many of these kind of stories are made up based on some real
facts. The problem is knowing which parts are real, which are exaggerated and
which are completely made up.
There are many bogs around so I'm sure
mosquitos where very abundant in those days. Maybe they let bats live in houses
as they were seen as beneficial.
Until not so long ago, some people in
the countryside had snakes in houses to keep rats at bay (much more efficient
than cats). That probably came from the Muslims. For example, Muslims had
domesticated mangooses and genets.
