A bat house experiment comparing 3 designs is underway at 3 locations in the US. 15 experiment stations each are already planned for Oregon, Minnesota, and South Carolina (45 stations total). At each station, a
4-chambered nursery house, a two-chambered rocket box, and two Oregon Wedge (single chamber) houses are being compared. All of the designs have been reconfigured to have the same internal volume to make for a better comparison. The Oregon Wedge design requires two houses to match the other two boxes' volumes.
Some stations are using pole frameworks to mount all 3 designs, others are mounting the houses on individual poles.
Other participants are being sought. Cooperators to date include:
Bureau of Land Management
US Forest Service
MN DNR
Clemson University
Potlatch Timber Corp.
BCI
state parks
private individuals
If you would like to participate in this experiment, detailed plans and instructions are available.
