Hi,to all,new member here.I am a woodshop teacher at our local HS,down in southern jersey.I am working doing a summer program with special needs students aged 11-19 years of age.In the last two weeks we finished a birdhouse.I would like to have my students build a bat house next.I thought it would be a good project relating people with disabilities & to bats that can-not see.Would any of the members here have a simple bat house plan available. Thanks Gene
Welcome! Below are two plans utilizing plywood for bat houses graciously created and provided by forum member Iowa Nate. Single chamber bat houses work best when mounted on buildings due to their lack of thermal mass so basically they become an extension of the building. Bat houses which are not on buildings need to be larger/heavier with multiple chambers and mass to retain heat and avoid temperature extremes. Should you desire bat house plans and ideas for multiple chamber bat houses someone here will likely be able to assist soon.
Welcome to the bat forum! Glad to hear that you are working with these special kids.
Bats are not blind. They see very well plus have a great echo location system to home in on flying insects. If you have not read up on bats, google up Bat Conservation International for a neat source of bat info.
