My bats appear to have left already.  I have not seen any emerge for the past several evenings, and this afternoon I went out to check the houses.  There isn't any new guano under the houses.  We had a heavy rain storm last Tuesday, which washed away most of the guano, and there hasn't been any since then, so there apparently haven't been any bats in the houses since then.

If they have left for the season, this is the earliest they have left by several weeks.

Larry, are you speaking of Big Browns or Little browns?  If it was a Big Brown nursery colony I'm not surprised but if it they were Big Brown males I am surprised you don't have at least a few straglers left.  Good feedback

Joe, I had a mixture of Big Browns and Little Browns.  One house was used as the nursery, and the other one was all the bats without young ones.  I put a a new house this spring, on the south end of the hay barn, and it was used by Big Browns as a nusery as well -- but, they left that house early on when it got too hot for them.  The other main houses have been up for years, and have had a pretty well established population.  I was surprised to see them empty already.  But then, we did have a record long hot season this year....even the creek that crosses the corner of our property dried up during the hot, dry spell.

I wouldn't worry too much. Of the five bat houses I have up for 5 or more years, I have seen them arrive and/or leave for the season 4 weeks early or late for some reason. Given Iowa's temperature extremes (up to 105 F in the summer and -10 F in the winter) I see this as no problem. Perhaps it's just temperature extremes that sent them somewhere else. I'm sure they will be back this spring as long as the house is in good condition!:)
