Ive made 3 bat houses and have just finished them up.I think they are rather unique in that I have made them to be accessable by lowering them by winch and pully like a purple martin house. I have also heated two of them. I made a heating core for one out of heat rope for reptiles(this one is a 3 chambered rocket box) and two nursery houses one with a heat panal. I have thermostats connected to each one and will set the temp to 75 which should be good on a cool night. The question i have is this. The 2 nursey houses are connected by a piece of tubing that runs about 8 inchs to each other. One house is mounted to the south the other to the north. The north house will pretty much be shaded by the south house.I figure the range of tempos will be warm to cool. Has anyone ever had experience with bats using a ridged tube to access another chamber/house?
Sounds great after trying to envision it. Please do post pics at some point if possible. At what height is the connecting tubing ie. 1/3 up from bottom 1/2 way etc. Rick I'm assuming that access to the tube can be made by the bats without exposing them to lower extremities and can be made from any interior chamber? Will stay tuned..
This connecting tube isnt really a big deal. I have a unique pole which is used for 4 individual martin houses. The martin houses once mounted resemble a large plus sign. Each house facing a different direction.I decided to put two standard nursery style bat house on this. One facing north and one facing south. The south house is vented and heated. The north house unvented unheated and painted black. I figured this combination would offer the best temperture variations. From what Ive read these animals have a wide range of temp tolerances and like to pick and choose accordingly. The bat houses fit on the carriage of the pole which I can raise and lower with a brake winch. I wanted the bats to be able to move back and forth between the houses without being exposed. I just cut a hole about a third of the way up and connected bo5th house with a 2 inch piece of black corrigated plastic pipe.Once its all mounted Ill take some pics and post them here.
