After reading and seeing pics of buildings were bats get in, how do they find these places. the gaps seem to be in places only an insect could find. Im also curious on how they actually investigate a bat house. Do they feel the haet escaping from cracks in the cool of the night, or in the case of bat houses do they use eco location and realize there is living space inside?
From what I've read and my own observations, it's probably a combination of all those things.........sensing the heat, echo-location and even sight.
They can probably feel the heat rising off a house roof in the summer and then investigate it closer to see if it is suitable for a roost.
They probably explore continuously throughout the summer so they will have more roosting options to accomodate changes in weather, wasp infestations or anything else that might disturb a roosting location.
I know I've definitely had better luck attracting bats to houses mounting on buildings than those mounted on a pole. I'm guessing bats probably check out every building in their territory for any crevice they can fit into.
