I have been observing some Mexican Free-tailed bats leaving an old
building at around 6:40 PM EST in Florida. They have been right on
schedule February 26 thru March 2 that I know of. I began monitoring
their departure times again on Sunday, March 05, 2006. I have not seen
them exit since then. I just watched for them to exit tonight from 6:20
PM to 7:25 PM and I did not see them exit. So basically, I have not
seen any sign of them for the past 3 nights.

Is this normal for them to not depart 3 nights in a row?

Depending on your location in Florida, it may be that the temps are to low for the bats to emerge. Here in NE Florida I haven't seen any bats for the past 4-5 nights. To cold for the bugs to come out no need for bats to take flight. It's suppose to get down into the upper 30s - low 40s tonight .

I asked this in the other post so please forgive the same question but where in Florida are you ?

Mike

Mike, I am in Tallahassee (about 2.5 hour drive west of you). I did see one lonely bat flying on Sunday night and Monday night, but the lonely bat was not from the old building colony I was monitoring. I agree, it might be a little cold, but the mosquitos and moths were out. I do hope they are doing ok, I am concerned about them. The owners of the building did not give me permission to perform an exclusion, so I haven't done so. All I can do is hope they take up residency in my bat houses. My houses are 100 feet from the entrance/exit point of the old building colony. They face the west, but I was limited on choices as to where I could mount them on my building. The back of my office building is metal, where the other 3 sides that face the road are a finished material and I couldn't mount my bat houses to that.
