Hello bat enthusiast, let me share with you my current bat project. I will be excluding some bats from a building where they are not wanted. I have already put up bat houses on a building close by in hopes of attracting them. The 2 houses that I put up are around 100 feet or so from this other building where they will be excluded from.
Here is a picture of the 2 houses I put up. They are painted white and they are around 15 feet high.
Has anyone ever performed an exclusion with nearby bat houses to attempt and attract them? If so, share your experience.

Hi Sam, I saw you recently on the purplemartin forums, glad to see another purple martin and bat enthusiast. Those houses look fantastic, where did you get them?
To answer your question about exclusions, yes people do this often (if they have any knowledge about it) and it often works out quite well. See University of Florida's bathouse which hosts 10,000's of bats which started from a small project that involved tearing down a building or something (someone correct me if I am wrong) which housed a lot of bats. Its also done with a lot of churches and other buildings that want rid of the bats but dont want to kill them.

Thanks for the reply, the bat houses are from OBC.
I think you misunderstood my question. I was actually looking for other people who have actually performed exclusions themselves personally. I am grateful for your reply though.

| Sam, I have done four exclusions with Bat Houses all mounted prior to exclusion. Bat houses ranged from 10 - 50 ft. from original area. At two of the sites, many of the bats relocated into the bat houses before the exclusion (based on previous exit count numbers). After the exclusion (within 2 nights) the bat house population increased to nearly the total of the original exit count from the building. At the other two sites a small number of bats took up residence within the bat houses prior to the exclusion with many bats taking up residence post exclusion. Fine houses there in the photo. Would you let us know what state they're in? I'm assuming south based on the chosen color of white? Good luck on the potential occupancy and we'll look forward to any observances you might have.

Joe, thanks for your reply. First of all, let me give you the distance of my bat houses from the original entrance point on the nearby building. It is exactly 100 feet (interesting that it came out to be 100 feet, maybe this is an omen). It is not in the line of site either, you have to walk 30 feet west from the original entrance point on the nearby building (happens to be right on the corner) to see the 2 bat houses on the other building. The bat houses are located in Florida.
Here is a picture, showing where the bats enter and exit the building.

Tallahassee, Florida is where the bats are.
Ok, here is the latest on these bats. They have disappeared. I have watched for almost a week now and I have not seen them exit the building. There were like clock work for a week or so. At first, I thought it might have been the string of cold weather, but I am doubtful of that anymore.
If you had to take an educated guess, what do you think happen to the bats? found a better roost? migrated? etc.

| Hmm very interesting. A forum member with experience with bats of the south would be invaluable at this point.
