This evening we had a old fashioned neighborhood wiener roast -- we needed to get rid of a brush pile, and this seemed like a good way to do it. As it got dark, the bats decided to help clean up the bugs that were attracted to the bonfire. They spent a lot of time circling around just above us, and out of reach of the fire, catching the hundreds of bugs that filled the air. Our neighbors were fascinated by them, and so thankful that we have them. As the fire died down and people started leaving, the number of bugs decreased pretty fast, and soon we didn't see the bats anymore.
This was the first time since we've had the bat houses that we've seen the bats this closeup. It was really neat!
