| Hi! I'm new to this forum. I think I might have a bat flying around my outside light pole, but am not sure. Every night about 9:30 I look out my window and see something with wings flying around the pole. It moves really fast, and I can't tell fer sure what it is. Could this be a bat, or is there some kind of bird that flies around light poles at night? Thank You, Pat

| Hey Pat I would say that you do indeed have a bat, Though you did not mention where you live as most bats are still migrating to northern areas. Bats are attracted to the bugs that are attracted to the light on your pole. THIS MIGHT BE A GOOD PLACE FOR A BAT HOUSE!!!! Brockbat.

| Hey Brockbat! Thanks for the reply! I live in the western part of Kentucky. Last night right before dark, I looked out my kitchen window toward the light pole, (it wasn't on yet) and saw several! I hollered at my hubby to come see, and he indeed thinks they are bats too!!!! I'm so excited! I do have bat houses up, but don't know if they are staying in them or not. I sure don't want to disturb them...LOL....They aren't very big, do you have any idea what kind of bats could be in my area? Thank You,....Pat

| Hey Pat. Check out bci.org there should be lots of info on bat distribution. If I recall your location will have several types of bats. Glad to hear you have a bat house. I just put my first one up last month and am still waiting for my Little Browns to migrate this far North, any day now! I'm putting up another house on Saturday. You should post a photo of your bat house on this site ( not as easy as it sounds, but I'm not up to date on that stuff ) Anyway keep up the bat watching; a cup of java and a cigar are ideal companions. Brockbat.

Hi Pat! Additionally, Kentucky has some valuable hibernacula (caves) as well. If your bat houses are too small they might not be suitable. Do you have the Bat House Builder's Handbook?
