I recently put up a 3-chamber bat house and wonder if I needed to put some 1" or 1.5" holes in the two baffles. I left a gap about 1" from the top of each baffle to the roof so any residents can roam from chamber to chamber if they climb to the top of the house....is that sufficient? I can easily modify if not since I made the baffles removable from the house. Thanks,
Dale

Make the 1" -1 1/2" holes for the bats to move from one baffle to next.
Make the holes about half-way down on the baffles.
If you leave a 1" gap at the top of the baffles , you will get a lot of wasps nests at the top. Very difficult to knock the wasps nests down when they located in the 1" gap.
Been there done that when I left a 1" gap at the top of some of my bat houses.

Kent,
Should I drill out 1 or 2 holes in each baffle? Their dimensions are 30" high by 24" wide. I will be able to get out the wasp nest out if they occur since I can remove the baffles. If wasps end up being a continuous problem, then I can remove the screws(won't be easy) holding the baffle from sliding in all the way and lessen the space at the top. The roof is sloped and the back baffle is about 1" higher than the front one so that area may not be good for wasps. Thanks for your help,
Dale

Dale ,
One hole in each baffle should be fine.
If your bat house is not to high and located where you can get under it , I use 1/2"electric conduit to knock wasps nest down. use 10 ft . if you need longer connect another with conduit connectors.
Flatten the length of baflles on one end , and after the bats have left to feed for the night shine a light up into bat house and knock the wasps nest down.

Kent,
Thanks for the quick response and advice. My newly erected(4/22/05) bat house is a little over 13' at the 6" landing pad region. You can check it out on the "pictures and links" section of the forum. Take it easy,
Dale
