| Just built 2 bat nursuries, put one up on my house and the other on my inlaws barn. I'm trying to get the bats out from under my deck as they find there way into my basement and can't get out and starve to death. Don't know how they get in though; all holes are plugged and vents are screened but they still get in. My deck reaches about 100 degrees f. on a sunny day so I figure they enjoy that. My bathouse is located on a west wall above a lower roof so lots of sun and radiant heat as well. I've just put one up on April 2nd and am eagerly awaiting the return of the migrating little brown bat. The other house is going on my inlaws barn. Also on the west wall. I'm hoping this will increase the bat population as the mosquito's are very bad the last few years. I'm also becoming a volunter bat researcher with BCI along with my 4 year old neice. She loves bats and is looking forward to having some moms and pups. We'll keep everyone updated. Luke and Isabella

| Fantastic! Do you have the bat house builder's handbook from BCI? Looking forward to your occupants in your bat houses. Good luck and will help in any way I can...

Hey Joe. Yes I used the plans from the BCI handbook to build 2 nursery houses. I left out the front vent but kept the side vents. I can always block them later. Stained them dark brown. Trying to get a photo of L01 (house number) to attach to my discusion, managed to get it on the photo list as BAT HOUSE IMG 4 jpg #53 I think but can't get it to come up as part of my discusion??? I'll keep trying. When I get L02 up I'll post it.
Thanks Luke and Isabell[/img]
Brockbat, HERE it is I shrank L01 for better viewing. After you get the URL after uploading image you paste it, highlight it then click on the Img box located above the compose box which puts two img tags before and after the URL. Click on edit to see what it looks like:

Brockbat,
What is the distance between the bottom of your bat house and what appears to be a roof? Looking at your pic leads me to believe that you may have your house up high enough but that you've got another structure not far enough below your house. If that is open to the ground underneath the house, then how far from the bat house to the vertical portions of your house?

Hey Dale, Thanks for your interest. The distance from the bottom of the bat house to the roof below it is 2 meters (6 ft 6 inches) I know it should be more but this is the only place I have that gets enough sun and heat. Of course the house sits in somewhat of a funnel, one vertical wall and 2 diagonal roof tops. Great for radiant heat. As this project is part of an exclution of bats from my basement and under my deck which is only 18 inches in height; I was thinking that 6 feet would be OK. The house faces west by southwest and come june will get full sun from 10 am to almost sunset. Plus any radiant heat from the morning sun hitting the slanted roof surface below the bathouse.
I saw a big brown 2 days ago at dusk flying aroud the neibourhood. I'm 100 yards from a stream (10-12 feet wide ) and less than a quarter mile from the St. Lawrence River Seaway. My house is 6 yrs old and I've had bats for 4 yrs now under my deck and in my basement.
IF I was a bat, I'd live here!!! Let me know what you think.
Regards, Brockbat
