Hey all,

It is true that a good 4"x4"x16' wood pole is one of the prefered poles to mount a bathouse on isn't it? The higher the better too I guess. My question is this: If you mount a bathouse on a pole that sways in the wind, even the tinyest bit, will the bats go looking for a more "solid" feeling house?

I'm planning to use a 4x4 for mounting the house, but even if I sink in 4' down there is going to be some shaking of the house in high winds isn't there?

Is this a non-issue?

Thanks,
KenA

Hi Ken,

BCI has a "pole-mounting tips" article in the Bat House Researcher newsletter archive at http://www.batcon.org/bhra; look in the Fall 2000 issue.

All poles will sway a little bit, and it does not seem to bother the bats.
Selena and I have watched 30-40 mph winds rock bat houses on 2-inch ID steel pipes, and bats rode it out in stride.

4 x 4 inch posts are the least preferred type of poles in our opinion.
Even PT posts warp, twist, and will enventually rot in the ground.
Steel pipe is far superior.

If using wood, I would use a 5 or 6 inch diameter log pole, or maybe
a 4 x 6 inch post.

Cheers,
