Free-tailed bats began passing through Austin 2-3 weeks ago, a little later than normal. I have not heard anything yet from northern Texas regarding the migratory subspecies, but Marvin Maberry in northeast Texas, Daingerfield to be exact, has the non-migratory subspecies of free-tails that stay year-round in his bat houses. They disappear when it's cold, but come right back when the weather warms up, so they stay somewhere locally. Marvin posts his bats' comings and goings on his website at http://www.maberrybat.com under the "Bat Talk" link.
Yup saw my first bat last night, actually my wife saw it in the basement. Since we live in eastern Ontario Canada i figure it must have hibernated behind the insulation and the outside wall. This is an ongoig problem for us but you can read about it in the discusions section. I'm a new member and love bats. Luke
