| Well it seems I had no luck attracting bats during summer or fall  . So I'm wondering if bats in my area will actively seek out roosts in the winter or will they stay with their current roost ?

| Well we know that in the colder areas this is easier to predict since bats are hibernating at this time. In Florida depending on the species and from what I understand, bats do use these roosts in the winter however, I would suspect that the odds of attracting them in winter if they were not attracted in spring summer or fall could be discouraging. Mike, did I not remember you saying you see bats feeding at night in your area or am I confusing you with someone else. How far are you from a sizable water source? If you haven't attracted them by the second season their current roosting needs may be satisfied or their may be another reason(s) they haven't chosen your digs. Maybe some Floridian experts can offer some advice.

| Yeah Joe your correct, I have seen them around feeding (not since early fall though). I have many , many man made lakes around, all from approximately 1/4 mile to 1 mile away. I haven't lost hope yet, I guess I put up the back to back houses in early August , so they really haven't been up very long. I was just wanting to know if they(bats) would be out and about or if I am just wasting my time staring at the sky and the bat house.

| When I put my first bat houses up, I checked them every other day for occupancy and since I had no luck after a while I stopped checking as frequently and then my wife left a white plastic chair outside beneath the bat houses at the base of the bat house tree and voila it was loaded with guano triggering my excitement. Hope you experience it and I would be patient until late spring early summer of 2005. If you don't get bats by then it is advisable to change some things and try again if your willing. Changing things could mean keeping one back to back house its current color and painting the other one a much lighter shade. Judging from your photo, looks like you have a light colored roof which might be indeed fine for florida, time will tell. Will look forward to your feedback next spring/summer. Do you have a copy of the Bat House Builder's Handbook? Mark Kiser just posted the news of the updated one here at the forum. I recommend it highly if you don't have it..
